Disposable plastic is a real scourge for health, but also for the environment. In France, 434,240 tons of plastic bottles are thrown away by households, representing 36% of the total plastic packaging used by households.

A directive of the European Parliament in 2019 sets ambitious targets to implement a circular economy to combat the production of this waste.

By 2030, all plastic packaging placed on the European market must be fully reusable and easily recyclable. Faced with these objectives, the giants of the food industry have made commitments over the last two decades, most of which have been abandoned or postponed.

Lack of realism, lack of will or lack of infrastructure: the problems encountered in achieving these objectives are not insurmountable, but require a strong mobilization of all actors: producers, consumers, public authorities.

Today, collection rates are insufficient. In 2018, only 55.3% of plastic bottles on the market were collected.
As a reminder, the recycling milestones are set at 77% in 2025 and 90% in 2029.

With an inefficient collection system and low consumer participation, governments and manufacturers will have to be creative to encourage and promote sustainable consumer purchasing habits and show a strong commitment to developing environmentally friendly packaging.
If the production of plastic bottles using recycled materials is a first step, there is still the problem of reuse: this is the notion of life circularity.

The high environmental stakes associated with the reduction of single-use plastics are pushing all the players against the wall. Although the goals are ambitious, it’s everyone’s duty to contribute to the success of this mission.

The first solution consumers should consider is to ban the use of these plastics.

By using tap water, households save money and make a positive contribution to reducing waste.

However, it is necessary to have confidence in the quality of the water distributed.
